- The object of the game of Rally O is to complete a course of stations (approx 12-14 stations) following a specific sequence. The course is numbered so that the participant can complete it in the correct order.:
- A judge sets the course with Rally O signs (stations) and all participants are able to walk and memorise it without their dogs
- Unlike traditional obedience which relies on the judge calling the required behaviour, Rally O relies on signs attached to stakes which the handler must interpret.
- A handler needs to become familiar with all the signs and then teach the dog the required behaviour. Prior to the competition, some of the more unusual signs will be placed at a workstation, so that competitors may famliarize themselves with the behaviours. Someone will be at the workstation to advise if required.
- No toys or food are allowed on the course during a competition however the use of voice and hand signals can be used to encourage the dog.
